Outreach Programs
Black Gold Outreach Schools offer a number of different programs to serve the diverse needs of our clientele. Find out more about each program by clicking on the links below.
Adult Education & Academic Upgrading
Senior High
In high school, core academic courses are offered at all levels of senior high school Science, Mathematics, English, and Social Studies. Opportunities are also available for students to earn credits in Physical Education, Work Experience, the Registered Apprenticeship Program, Green Certificate, and a number of Career and Technology Studies options. Students can also sign-up for our attendance-based options in Foods, Outdoor Education, First Aid, Personal Taxation, and Makerspace/Design Studies. Our senior high program offers
- independent, self-directed, and self-paced study programs for all students
- one-on-one tutorials and program planning sessions
- attendance-based small group option classes
The following categories of senior high students are eligible to attend:
- students who currently hold a high school diploma and are upgrading course marks
- students who are pregnant and/or parenting
- students directed by the Black Gold School Division superintendent or Student Services
- resident students for whom the attendance area principal and the Black Gold Outreach
administrator agree would be best served by an alternate education placement - non-resident students
Junior High
At the junior high level, students are offered a complete academic program that is approved by Alberta Education. Throughout the year they work on five core courses – Mathematics, Language Arts, Social Studies, and Science; and Health & Wellness. A supervised study hall for Junior High Outreach students operates Monday to Friday from 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM or 12:00 PM – 3:00 PM. They are expected to attend daily for tutorial help and/or to take advantage of our work environment during this time. At other times, due to space and staffing limitations, students should expect that some of their school day be spent at an alternate location, preferably under their parents’ supervision.
All prospective Junior High students must be referred to Black Gold Outreach by their school principal or Student Services.

Knowledge & Employability
Knowledge and Employability courses are available to students in grade 8 through 12 who meet specific government criteria. These courses are intended to provide students with opportunities to experience success and become well prepared for employment, further studies, active citizenship, and lifelong learning.
Knowledge and Employability courses are designed to provide entry-level employment skills for students who have expressed a goal of leaving school before earning the requirements of a senior high school diploma. These courses do have reduced academic expectations and a greater emphasis on occupational exploration and preparation. A student who takes one or more Knowledge and Employability courses may earn a High School completion document called a “Certificate of Achievement”. Alberta Education’s High School Certificate of Achievement requirements can be accessed here. Motivated students can transition successfully from Knowledge and Employability courses to the courses necessary to achieve a senior high school diploma. Reviewing each students’ learning plan on an annual basis and adjusting their goals and courses as needed are important parts of the process.
Inter-Ed
Secondary students registered at a traditional high school may not be able to take all the courses they want to due to schedule or timetable conflicts. Black Gold Outreach School can offer these students the opportunity to take these courses, while remaining enrolled at their primary school. This is known as Inter-Ed Registration. Inter-Ed students have access to the same support services and courses that full-time Outreach students do.
Inter-Ed registrations require the knowledge and consent of the primary school the student is registered at.
Adult Education/Academic Upgrading
Thinking of going back to school? You are not alone. Every year, thousands of Albertans go back to school after being away from the classroom. The adult learning options offered at Outreach are for those adults who may not yet have achieved a high school diploma or for those who may just need to upgrade their current high school credentials for a post-secondary prerequisite. Outreach for Pregnant and Parenting Teens (OPPT)
OPPT is an educational support group for pregnant and parenting teens in the Black Gold Regional Division. Our goal is to help students continue their education and to learn positive parenting skills.
This program allows teen parents to participate in their classes and to observe the modelling of healthy parent-child relationships. The OPPT program fills a growing need in the community for connecting teens to a safe supportive learning environment where their personal and educational goals can be pursued with an enhanced probability of success.
Dual Credit
As part of our commitment to Inspire Success in our students, Black Gold School Division No.18 (BGSD) offers a program which provides a dual credit opportunity to BGSD high school students. Through this program, students will earn college/university credits from a post-secondary institution and high school credits from their school by completing college-level coursework. This program is in partnership with Black Gold School Division, Lakeland College, Olds College, Portage College, Northern Lakes College, SAIT Polytechnic, and Alberta Education
